When you're running a busy anti-coagulation clinic, you need instant access to your patients' records. You want to dose your patients and book appointments for them there and then, cutting down on non-attenders.

RealCoag is Reality's flexible anti-coagulation therapy management system. It is based on the system developed by, and used at, the Bristol Royal Infirmary (part of the United Bristol Healthcare Trust) - a busy teaching hospital. Reality has enhanced this system as part of a consortium consisting of UBHT, Gloucestershire Royal NHS Trust and the Oxford Radcliffe NHS Trust.

RealCoag is written in the 'M-Technology' programming language (MUMPS), a widely-used programming language for medical systems. This means not only that it can run on a wide range of hardware platforms, including PCs, Unix systems and VMS, but that it can easily integrate with your existing pathology and patient administration system - if you want it to. On the other hand, if you're running clinics outside a hospital, RealCoag can work as a stand-alone system. It can even run on a lap-top computer!

RealCoag can access patient details directly from your patient index, so you always get the most up-to-date information.

In a hospital environment, RealCoag can maintain a list of patients waiting to be dosed, directly from the pathology system. Once a patient has been dosed and an appointment booked, these details can be sent back to the pathology system.

Secure

RealCoag has a system of access levels enabling each user to have their own password. You can customise the system so that people using it only have access to the menu choices they need. You can even restrict access to individual items on the patient details screen , to prevent unauthorised changes.

Comprehensive

RealCoag is simple to use, but has all the features you need to run an anti-coagulation clinic:

• Full patient history - all details are shown on screen, including comments.
• Range checking - high and low limits for INR can be defined and abnormal results highlighted. Entry of a target INR can set default values for the limits.
• Delta checking - if an INR result is in range but has changed significantly from the previous result, this is highlighted.
• Automatic calculation of dose and next appointment - uses the widely accepted Hillingdon algorithm for dose calculation (where the calculation constant can be easily amended or an entirely different algorithm could be used). The next appointment date is determined by a flexible, rule-based system.
• Dosing profiles - comments can be attached automatically to certain doses, for example instructions on how many tablets to take.
• DNAs - it is easy to enter DNAs and associated comments. However, because you can dose the patient in the clinic, book an appointment for them there and then and print out a label for their attendance book, this should reduce the number of non-attenders.
• Flexible clinic schedules - you can define regular days when the clinic does not run, public holidays and other annual non-working days, so that any attempt to book an appointment on one of those days will trigger a warning message automatically.
• Labels - you can pre-define your own label formats, complete with patient details, dosing instructions and next appointment date, then print out a label immediately in the clinic.

RealCoag is fully supported. Our support contracts offer a four-hour response time, where a consultant will connect to your system to investigate and fix any problems.

Evolving

Enhancements - RealCoag is regularly enhanced to meet the changing needs of modern anti-coagulation clinics. Its flexible design means that the requirements of individual user sites can be readily incorporated.
